{"id":37,"date":"2024-10-11T18:14:40","date_gmt":"2024-10-11T22:14:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bioinspired.syr.edu\/emirge-bio\/?page_id=37"},"modified":"2025-09-04T15:27:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T19:27:16","slug":"affiliate-students","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/bioinspired.syr.edu\/emirge-bio\/apply\/affiliate-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Associate Students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NRT Associates Policy <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eligibility <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Graduate students (PhD or Masters students with a letter of advisor support) from any of the NRT primary or secondary departments are eligible to participate as associates. This includes. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>SU: Bio, Chem, Physics, MAE, BMCE, Math, CEE.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upstate: Cell and Dev Bio, BioChem and MolBio. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ESF: Chemistry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students can join as an associate in any year of their PhD program. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Associates in AY1 are not required to have completed certain responsibilities; see details below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Responsibilities <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By the end of the AY2 (or end of first participating year for those joining after AY2) associates should: \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete Individual Development Plan Blackboard modules.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify a primary mentor and have them complete the mentor Blackboard modules.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participate in cohort building activities:\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Professional development programming (attend a sufficient number of workshops in the series to attain a micro-credential as outlined by the Graduate School). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participate in one of the two other opportunities (attend several of the events). \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Student-led seminar. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peer mentoring circles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Associates must complete the required NSF reporting requirements (the Individual Development Plan prepares you to complete this report).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Associates are expected to take the two core courses in AY2 or later (Bio-inspired Communication and Ethics and Emergence in Biology and Bio-inspired Systems). \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>NRT Associates who are in AY3 or beyond and who have already fulfilled credit requirements for their program\u00a0can petition to audit or be exempted from\u00a0the NRT courses.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Starting in AY2, associates are eligible to apply for NRT seed\/travel funds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Associates in AY1 are eligible (and encouraged) to nominate themselves or be nominated for fellowship in AY2. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Micro-credentials are awarded for participation in PDP via graduate school.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Earn higher level micro-credential that is NRT specific. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earn lower level micro-credentials for participating in cohort-building activities. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Associates can optionally take the STEM entrepreneurship class. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Associates will gain access to brochures and brainstorming for NRT research projects. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Associates will be invited to participate in all cohort-building and social events. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Associates will receive augmented faculty mentoring and staff support as part of the program.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NRT Associates Policy Eligibility Responsibilities Benefits<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":36,"featured_media":0,"parent":21,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-37","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/bioinspired.syr.edu\/emirge-bio\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/37"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/bioinspired.syr.edu\/emirge-bio\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/bioinspired.syr.edu\/emirge-bio\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/bioinspired.syr.edu\/emirge-bio\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/36"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/bioinspired.syr.edu\/emirge-bio\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=37"}],"version-history":[{"count":8,"href":"https:\/\/bioinspired.syr.edu\/emirge-bio\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/37\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":365,"href":"https:\/\/bioinspired.syr.edu\/emirge-bio\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/37\/revisions\/365"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/bioinspired.syr.edu\/emirge-bio\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/21"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/bioinspired.syr.edu\/emirge-bio\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=37"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
