EmIRGE-Bio supports graduate students in multiple science and engineering disciplines throughout their graduate career. The interdisciplinary program is designed to integrate research and an innovative team-based curriculum, with opportunities such as: 

  • Learn about cutting-edge topics in team-based interdisciplinary courses including Emergent Intelligence in Biological and Bio-Inspired Systems, STEM Entreprenuership, and BioInspired Communication and Ethics 
  • Join an active cohort of interdisciplinary students across Syracuse University and SUNY Upstate Medical University campuses who are interested in team-based science for work and social activities 
  • Work with a primary mentor in your department and a team of co-mentors in other departments to learn new skills 
  • Apply for program-dedicated seed funding for graduate-student led projects and conference participation 
  • Participate in an internship track for students interested in entrepreneurship and industry positions 
  • Engage in a highly assessed professional development program with micro-credentialing for key transferrable skill sets 

Pathways to participation

We offer several pathways to participate in the program that vary depending on when you enter EmIRGE-Bio and whether you have fellowship support:

  • Funded Fellow, new applicant: admitted to the program at the same time as applying to graduate school at Syracuse University. Must be a new admit to the University and U.S. citizen or green card holder. Information for new applicants.
  • Funded Fellow, current graduate student: this pathway is open to current first-year graduate students in one of our associated departments (Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics). Must be a U.S. citizen or green card holder. Apply early in the spring semester of your first year. Information for current students.
  • Program Associate: open to any current graduate student in one of our associated departments at Syracuse University (see above), SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, or SUNY Upstate Medical University. Associates do not receive funding, but benefit from every other element of the program, including participation in the curriculum, internship track, and seed funding grants.
